Focusing Issues with Film Cameras
This post may be a little premature but I am just too excited to share my film scans from Paris that landed in my inbox from The Find Lab! Seriously, better than Christmas! Not to mention, great encouragement that my camera focuses correctly and I didn't botch any of the film. There is a common mistake that new to film photographers make when it comes to thinking their loved once before film camera is out of focus. That is the diopter may be set for the past owners eye sight. The diopter is the little twist knob, normally flush with the camera body and beside the view finder eye piece, that allows you to set the "glasses" either near sighted or far for your cameras eye piece.
For this set of film I shot all of my landscape and scenery images on my 35 mm Canon 1V with Fuji 400 film, gahhh so much better than I ever could have imagined they would turn out! There is just so much to love with this camera, I am so happy I stumbled upon it, I love that I can use my L series canon glass on this camera too. The second part of this post was shot with a medium format Contax 645 and Fuji 400 film.
A few lessons I learned while shooting Film in Paris -
Give into the word "learning". It is so easy to forget that you are new to something and allow yourself to hold your true potential back. I am learning film, it is a new form of art for me and I am pleased as punch with my results. Fear was holding me back from pulling out my film camera but I am so ready to bring it along to a few engagement sessions and weddings! The amazing thing about film is that I can quickly capture 16-36 frames and continue to shoot with my digital camera to make sure all the rest of the moments are captured.
Organization is super important. Especially, if you are shooting 35mm film and cannot tell if is shot on already but in general you don't want to mess up your film! Which is why purchased a super handy bag to help me keep my exposed film separated from my film that still some love. Luckily, all of my film shooting has been for fun so my little mix-up with my 35mm should not be a big deal and, fingers crossed I figured out which film needed to be processed and which was still ready to be shot on! When went to stay at my parents house after the hurricane I accidentally mixed up the film, which is the biggest no ever and a wonderful lesson to learn when it was just for fun.
It is so worth it! Cue the happy dance and hip-hip-hoorays I am just over the moon excited with my growing love of film.
I encourage all my photographer friends to go out and play with film. You can easily pick up a 35 mm at a wonderful price! I can't wait to share the rest of my scans from the Goodman Lab once I receive those along with a break down of prices and procedures that the film labs had.
